Oh how the two systems remind me of Aesop's fable, The Ant and the Grasshopper. @_@ The ant(Korea)? shows a work ethic with less fun and stuff, while the grasshopper(America) seems to ignore work and have more fun. Only difference...Korean students still seem WAYY happier than American students o.e

Here in the US, it's considered abnormal if you aren't in an extra-curricular. It's kind of frowned upon, actually. If you aren't doing something that is showcasing a talent of yours, it's inferred that you won't get into a good college or university.
I was an honors and AP student my 4 years in high school but my parents didn't really care about that, they just cared that I was doing theatre and show choir and people were noticing? me for my talent.

wow, I'm never moving to Korea. I mean studying is good but expressing my talent and standing out? in the crowd (in a good way) has made me who I am today. My cousin always ask me why am I so different? Or why can't you be like everybody else? I tell her the same thing all the time "If everyone was the same, how would the world function? It would be so boring" xD

I was told my whole life that we as children have the responsibility to study hard/ do well in school in order to get a college degree, good jobs,? etc. == It's like brain-washing someone since childhood, and most of the peers I know, they ARE brainwashed this way! I don't think they really know why they are in school, repeating the schedule they hate all their life. I guess part of the reason is Asian culture teaches kids to be submissive without questioning...

Overheard some conversations between mothers, I thought some of them are ridiculous! They would complain about their children not studying afterschool, not studying in the weekends, watching TV for 2 hours (like it's somekind of big deal!!!), going out with friends. and 'studying' here means? reading the academic materials, not something else like maybe practising piano, learnin a breakdance move or somehting. It seems like they want their children to be studying all the time with no social life!

I totally agree with all of this. In South Korea, studying is pushed too much. In North America (or at least the US, I don't know about Canada), socializing and social status is pushed too much. I'm an average student. Since I switched schools, my grades all shot up and are As (they were seriously Fs before!) and all around me are just these...Horrible, horrible, STUPID people. No, not all of them are lacking in intelligence, but it sure seems like it. I? wish education was pushed more here...
