Oh how the two systems hark back me of Aesop’s fable, The Ant and the Grasshopper. @_@ The ant(Korea)? shows a work ethic with less fun and stuff, while the grasshopper(America) seems to ignore work and have more fun. Only variation…Korean students still seem WAYY more pleased than American students o.e

Here in the US, it’s considered abnormal if you aren’t in an extra-curricular. It’s kind of frowned upon, really. If you aren’t doing something that is showcasing a talent of yours, it’s inferred that you won’t get into a excellent institution or university.
I was an honors and AP apprentice my 4 years in high school but my parents didn’t really care about that, they just cared that I was doing theatre and show choir and people were noticing? me for my talent.

wow, I’m never moving to Korea. I mean studying is excellent but expressing my talent and standing out? in the crowd (in a excellent way) has made me who I am today. My cousin always question me why am I so different? Or why can’t you be like everybody else? I tell her the same thing all the time “If all was the same, how would the world function? It would be so dull” xD

I was told my whole life that we as children have the dependability to study hard/ do well in school in order to get a institution degree, excellent jobs,? etc. == It’s like brain-washing someone since childhood, and most of the peers I know, they ARE brainwashed this way! I don’t reckon they really know why they are in school, repeating the schedule they despise all their life. I guess part of the reason is Asian culture teaches kids to be submissive without questioning…

Overheard some conversations between mothers, I thought some of them are ridiculous! They would complain about their children not studying afterschool, not studying in the weekends, watching TV for 2 hours (like it’s somekind of huge deal!!!), going out with friends. and ‘studying’ here means? reading the academic materials, not something else like maybe practising piano, learnin a breakdance go or somehting.It seems like they want their children to be studying all the time with no social life!

I perfectly agree with all of this. In South Korea, studying is pushed too much. In North America (or at least the US, I don’t know about Canada), socializing and social status is pushed too much. I’m an average apprentice. Since I switched schools, my grades all shot up and are As (they were seriously Fs previous to!) and all around me are just these…Horrible, horrible, STUPID people. No, not all of them are lacking in intelligence, but it sure seems like it. I? wish education was pushed more here…
